With the noble objective of empowering women through higher education, Joda Women's College made its humble beginning in the year 1987 under the Society Registration Act of 1861. The college came into being as the first college in Joda with the untiring and enthusiastic efforts made by its founder Mr. Jitu Patnaik, an eminent industrialist, successful politician and a visionary. Like minded members of the Governing Body made every effort to raise funds for the construction of its first building. Tata Steel and Joda Municipality eagerly came forward to take up the first construction of the college which is situated in the heart of Joda on the banks of river "Sona" amid lush green setting.
The college started functioning with the opening of +2 Arts stream with 128 seats affiliated to CHSE Orissa and soon proved to be a blessing for the girl students mostly poor and downtrodden in this tribal and mining belt who earlier had to cover long distances to seek higher studies. With good academic results in CHSE Exams the college subsequently opened its +3 Arts wing from the year 1991 with 64 seats, then affiliated to Utkal University and later on came under North Orissa University which was formed in 1998.
Since then, the college has grown from strength to strength against all odds marching ahead towards its cherished goal of becoming an ideal learning centre added with human values. A dedicated team of teaching and non-teaching staff are the most treasured asset of the college who have shown extraordinary zeal and commitment towards the all round growth of the students. A good student-teacher relationship is a unique aspect found in the college campus.
Honours courses in History & Political Science were opened in 2000 with 16 seats each. The college was granted permanent affiliation and concurrence both at +2 and +3 level from the session 2003-2004. Seat enhancement from 64 to 80 at +3 levels was approved in 2003-2004. Since 2005, the college has become an approved study centre of North Orissa University offering courses in MBA and PGDCA under self financing Distance Learning Mode. The launching of +2 Commerce stream starts from the current session 2009-10 with 64 seats along with I.T. at +2 Arts in self finance mode.
A hundred seated campus hostel with all basic facilities, a well furnished library and a well equipped computer lab with internet facilities need a special mention.
The college has very active NSS and Youth Red Cross Units. Holding Awareness Camps, Seminars and Blood Donation Camps are a regular feature. Red Ribbon Club under YRC was formed in 2008. An orchard on the river bank gives the college a pollution free environment.
The College has been included under Section 2(f) and 12(B) of the U.G.C. since 2008.During the session 2009-10, the college with the initially released U.G.C. grant has successfully started Remedial Coaching Classes, Equal Opportunity Centre, U.G.C. Network Resource Centre and Career and Counselling Cell. With the pumping of adequate funds from the UGC in the coming years the college hopes to progress on its path of better value based quality education at a much faster pace.
